Warwick man to serve 18 years for bank robbery and crash

Published on Friday, May 02, 2025

Attorney General Peter F. Neronha announced today that a Warwick man has been sentenced in Kent County Superior Court to serve 18 years at the Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI) for a bank robbery and subsequent car chase and crash that left a father injured.

On April 30, 2025, Superior Court Justice Kevin F. McHugh sentenced Roy L. Mangum (age 40) to 35 years, with 18 years to serve at the ACI, and 35 years of probation.  The defendant pleaded nolo contendere to three counts of first-degree robbery, one count of eluding police during a high-speed chase, one count of driving to endanger resulting in serious bodily injury, one count of possessing a firearm after conviction of a crime of violence, one count of carrying a pistol without a license, one count use of a firearm during a crime of violence.

“Unfortunately, this defendant’s actions are not the plotline of some action movie, but rather real-life crimes which demonstrate an utter disregard for both the law and public safety,” said Attorney General Neronha. “In his attempt to escape police, this defendant seriously injured the father of two young kids, and put many other people in harm’s way. And here, the lengthy sentence matches the severity of his crimes. I am grateful for the investigative work of the Warwick Police Department and commend Special Assistant Attorney General John Malloy for his work on this case”

Had the case proceeded to trial, the State was prepared to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that on January 5, 2024, the defendant entered the TD bank at 2625 West Shore Road in Warwick and robbed three tellers at gunpoint.  The masked defendant fled in a black rental pickup truck.  The tellers alerted Warwick Police, who spotted the pickup on Warwick Avenue minutes later.  While the defendant initially yielded when an officer tried to stop him, he suddenly fled and led police on a chase from Warwick Avenue and onto Airport Road at speeds that reached over 100 miles per hour.  The defendant crashed into a father travelling with his two young children as he approached Post Road.  Police seized a .25 caliber gun and $5057 in cash stolen during the robbery.

“This defendant acted with reckless disregard for the safety of our community, and I’m glad justice could be served in this case,” said Warwick Police Chief Bradford Connor. “Thank you to the men and women of the Warwick Police Department and to our partners at the Attorney General’s Office for their work in the investigation and prosecution of this case.”

Special Assistant Attorney General John Malloy of the Attorney General’s Office and Detective Terance McMullin and Officer Joseph Di’Iorio of the Warwick Police Department led the investigation and prosecution of this case.
