On July 8, 2022, the Providence County Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Derek Sheppard with one count of murder, one count of discharging a firearm while in the commission of a crime of violence, one count of simple assault, and one count of possession of a pistol without a license.
The alleged acts occurred in the city of Providence sometime on February 9, 2022. The Providence Police Department conducted the investigation.
The defendant is scheduled to be arraigned on July 13, 2022, in Providence County Superior Court.

The investigation was initiated in accordance with the Attorney General’s Protocol for the Review of Incidents Involving Use of Deadly Force, Excessive Force and Custodial Death.
